For Fans. I've always wondered why, though it's always referred to as a classic, the Garland A Star is Born is not a movie many people see. Exceptional. Judy Garland was an actress of the true MGM mold - that is to say, she knew how to do it bigger, better and louder than everybody else. As Indispensable as Oz. Any fan of Garland or of the original downsized version of the film will join me in celebrating this restored, panoramic version as well as the enhanced quality and convenience of the DVD. Affair of the Heart. Essential viewing. JUDY'S GREATEST TRIUMPH. From the glorious overture of "The Man That Got Away" to the penultimate closing line, this is Judy Garland's, (and one of Hollywood's) greatest triumph. A true classic. Yes, it's overlong and dated but not particularly campy. Grace Kelly won the oscar for 1954 not Loretta Young. .. A Star Is Born. A triumphant return to the screen after a four-year absence for the ineffable Judy Garland, this is the quintessential Hollywood story-and a perfect showcase for Judy at the peak of her powers. I'VE BEEN HEARD!! THE BEST "JUDY" AND BEST "STAR" I saw this recent reissue of the 1954 STAR IS BORN in a store, but did not see it in Widescreen. If You Pick Out 1 Version Over the Other, You Miss Out! People have a tendency to state which version of a "Star is Born" is BETTER than the other and which version you should buy, the one with Janet Gaynor or the one with Judy Garland. A Garland for Her. In love Judy Garland, and I'd marry her (if she'd have me) if she were alive today. JUDY WAS DISGRACEFULLY ROBBED OF HER OSCAR!! If anyone truly deserved the Oscar for the Best Actress of 1954 it was our beloved Judy! A great film in every sense of the word. I highly recommend this film. The Greatest Judy Garland Film Ever Made In Her Adult Life. This is the best and greatest movie Judy Garland has ever made in her adult life. Garland at her film apex in garish musical production! All involved in the making of this grand-scale, Judy showcase should have learned that less is more. Garland Is Great, Mason Still Greater. It's hard to impossible to believe that George Cukor's 1954 musical remake of A STAR IS BORN was ever a box-office failure or considered to be anything less than a perfect movie. Wonderful story of unrequited love. I find this film special because, in an era where films focus so much on the sexual aspect of love, this film tells a story of two people whose love transcends the physical. Wonderful Production but 1937 Version Was BEST. Judy Garland's singing and dancing & George Cukor's directing saved this film from being a total flop.
Great Masterpiece. Only the truly great films are done in by executives who think they know more about the art. Judy's Star Is Reborn! Let me begin this brief text by informing, you the reader, that this film is my very favorite of all. A flawed cinematic gem not to be missed. Few films depicting Holloywood by Hollywood have ever managed this degree of success, though the formula is somewhat curious. One of the Greatest. One of the all-time greats of Hollywood! Hello everybody, this is Mrs. James Mason Is The Real Lead Character. Judy Garland's character, Esther/Vicki, is too perfect a person for us to find deep resonance with her as she shoots to the top of the movie heap with the help of her husband, played by James Mason. DVD looks GORGEOUS! Wow! A Star is Born. I read all the reviews listed prior to purchasing and I didn't read anywhere that reconstruction actually meant that they put black and white still pictures in the place of the missing moving picture sequences. Why watch this when you can watch the '37 version? I generally dislike remakes and this was no exception.
"Star" is shining on DVD. The much awaited DVD release of "A Star is Born" is finally here. Judy At Her Best. Anyone with a love for Judy Garland must own ASIB. Restored? Still photos in black and white? That's a movie? "A Star is Born" is still one of my favorite films. Perhaps Garland's Best Work. I reluctantly gave this superb film 5 stars not because of any shortcomings in the script or the acting-both are unbelievebly good-but because of what the studio had done to the movie. Judy's Best! If half of this film hadn't been left on the editing room floor in 1954, it would have been recognized for the last 50 years for what it was (and is): one of the greatest movies of all time! Garland's musical genius makes "Star" special. Recently I saw a 2 hour documentary on the musical lyricist, Johnny Mercer and it was noted in it that Mercer had an affair with a very young 19 yr old starlet by the name of Judy Garland. A Star is born. A Star is born tells the story of Ester Blodgette (Judy Garland)a talented singer who is singing with the Glenn Miller Orchestra when the film opens. GARLAND AT HER VERY BEST. This is THE Judy Garland film to own. A Star is Born-THE Star Is Born. Although this film was a remake of the 1937 Janet Gaynor/Frederick March film, that version cannot touch the brilliance, luster, intensity and artistry of the 1954 film. Just imagine...... What else can be said?
The performance of the stars are excellent. This is a movie with numerous solo performances and dancings by Judy Garland, though the dances were inserted a bit too often and not always convincing. Any Garland fan who hasn't seen this is in for a treat. Judy, truly the best. I consider myself a musical buff to the core, and I have enjoyed this movie very much ever since I first saw it. What about James? Judy,Judy,Judy! A dark Dichotomy of Careers Heartbreakingly Told. Essentially this is a film of one rising star and one falling star in the fickle Hollywood arena where one can gain prominence one day and obscurity the next. What a Dud! This is without a doubt both Judy Garlands and James Mason's worst movies! An interesting, occasionally admirable failure. Not a few persons consider "A Star is Born" to be Judy Garland's finest film, and there is, indeed, a great deal to admire in it. Knockout DVD from Warner Bros. This is the way DVD's should always be: a perfectly crisp anamorphic transfer with vibrant colors, lots of mesmerizing extras like the different takes of "The Man That Got Away" and the premiere pieces, and an altogether top-ten movie with a great story and the quintessential Judy Garland part.
Most Annoying! I found this DVD release of A STAR IS BORN impossible to watch. The Ultimate Musical. The best. Despite WB's Attempt to Slice It Up, A Star is Re-Born. Ironically, I recently attended a taping of a popular new TV show at Studio 4 on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank where a plaque commemorates the fact that the 1954 classic, A STAR IS BORN, was filmed there nearly 50 years ago. The Star That Got Away. While Judy deserved an Oscar compared to wooden-winner Grace Kelly and how she lost is a mystery (backstabbing friends like that, who needs? A Star Still Glitters. Judy's best performance! The story is wonderful, the songs are beautiful, Judy lights up the screen when she sings, and her performance blew me away! HELLO, THIS IS MRS. NORMAN MAINE! Okay but not great! I like Judy Garland as both an actress and a singer but this was definitely not one of her best movies, Judy did do a good job with her performance and James Mason did do a good job with his portrayal of the alcoholic husband but the movie in general was uneven and flawed despite their talent. Simply the Best Performance Ever. I had the good fortune to have seen this movie in its original, uncut, length on Christmas Day 1954 at the Pantages Theater in LA. Quit all the singing!
